Kiera has recently completed her Master’s in Marine Biology, where her thesis was undertaken in collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey. Her research analysed data collected by scientists on Bird Island, investigating how climate change is influencing the phenology of gentoo and macaroni penguins. She is now working towards publishing this research, while continuing to build her experience in marine conservation.
Over the past few months, Kiera has been interning with Seal Rescue Ireland, and she is soon heading to Cyprus for a month to support sea turtle conservation efforts. These experiences have strengthened her passion for marine and polar conservation, while giving her the opportunity to work across a range of environments and conservation challenges.
Coming from a working-class background and growing up far from the sea, Kiera is particularly passionate about making marine and polar science more accessible. She hopes to use her role as Social Media Officer to showcase the diverse opportunities available within polar research and conservation, share the stories of those working in the field, and inspire the next generation of polar scientists, especially those who may not traditionally see themselves represented in the sector.
