Background:

Emily has recently completed her BSc Physical Geography degree at Lancaster University, in which she has had a particular interest in glaciology and polar sciences. Her passion for these topics was first sparked while learning about glaciation at A-level, where she began to learn about the interdisciplinary nature of polar science, and the seemingly endless areas for research. This was largely the inspiration for Emily to study Physical Geography at undergraduate level, hoping to delve deeper into glaciology.
She completed her undergraduate dissertation on the correlation of the North Atlantic Oscillation index with glacier retreat patterns at Jostedalsbreen, Norway (1980-2023, via LandSat imagery), one of her first opportunities to individually research glaciers, as well as studying Glacial Studies modules. She also joined the Glaciology research group at the university, despite being the only undergraduate student attending any meetings (sometimes, hanging out with postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers can be fun!).
She has also studied alpine glaciers in a field trip to Arolla, Switzerland, where students ran independent projects. Her project involved micrometeorological measurements to calculate point-based surface melt values on Glacier de Pièce.

She is currently considering her next steps before likely pursuing more glaciology-related study in the future, hoping to gain knowledge, perspective (+ some money!) over the next year. Thus far, she has worked part time jobs and internships related to sustainability, biodiversity, and decarbonisation.
Outside study, she enjoys scenic walks, wild swimming, hanging out with animals, singing, reading, and playing video games (namely Stardew Valley and Mario Kart).
