Hamish was born and raised in the Falkland Islands, he was fortunate to spend much of his childhood exploring the gateway island’s coasts and Sub-Antarctic life. Opportunities to meet polar scientists and later volunteer on projects across the Islands further inspired a future in polar marine biology. Leaving the Islands for higher education he studied undergraduate Marine Biology at the University of Exeter (Falmouth campus) and is currently working on a MRes in Scientific Diving at the University of Plymouth. He conducted both degree thesis projects with BAS, at undergrad exploring depth mediated benthic species association network changes from a pre-existing Rothera dataset and for the MRes is currently assessing functional group diversity explained variation in blue carbon across Plymouth Sound. Alongside his studies he enjoys exploring mountains or ocean, especially via surfing, climbing, running or diving.
