Polar science should be for everybody, so the UK Polar Network runs a variety of projects to support the inclusion of polar issues in the school curricula, and to organise events that allow pupils, students and the wider public to learn more about life and research in the polar regions, as well as the careers open to school leavers in similar fields.
All forms of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are needed for Polar research, so we aim to enthuse young people about them all. We organise for our members and partners to visit schools across the UK to give assemblies, workshops and career guidance. We work with schools that are in economically deprived areas and make sure to highlight that anybody can become a Polar scientist.
The UK Polar Network organises:
- School Visits: Visits by polar scientists tailored to groups of any age to learn about polar issues
- Polar Pen Pal scheme: The opportunity for school pupils to write to polar researchers with any questions they have about life and work in the polar regions
- Antarctic Flags scheme: Our scheme that gives schools the opportunity to supplement lessons about Antarctica with the chance to send a flag design to be photographed in Antarctica
- Education Resources: [COMING SOON] resources to supplement classroom teaching on polar issues
- Science Festivals: Our team of volunteers gets around the UK to share polar research with families at science festivals and events
- Polar Beers: Polar Scientists share their exciting science with members of the public in an informal setting like a pub
