Background:

Alan is currently Head of Geography at King’s Ely (Junior) in Cambridgeshire and served as President of the Geographical Association 2021-22. He has 30 years teaching experience, and also worked for the Geographical Association as Secondary Curriculum Leader 2008-11. His Living Geography blog has had over 6 million page views, alongside other blogs & websites he curates. As a freelance consultant he has completed work for Google, RGS-IBG, BBC, Collins, Ordnance Survey, ESRI UK, British Red Cross, Costa, TUI, South Georgia Heritage Trust & many others. He has written textbooks for all levels of education. He worked for the Open University’s VITAL service for 18 months & has been involved in numerous ERASMUS+ projects. He was co-founder of the Geography Collective, creators of the ‘Mission:Explore’ books. Alan is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Chartered Geographer (Teacher), a GA Primary Geography Champion & consultant to the GA. In 2013, he received the Tivy Education Medal & Honorary Fellowship from the RSGS, and received the RGS-IBG OS Award for ‘excellence in secondary geography teaching’ in 2008. He worked as an OS #GetOutside Champion from 2018-20.

He is the recipient of a UCL Fawcett Fellowship for 2022-23.
