Background:

I graduated from UCL with an MRes in Risk and Disaster Reduction, for which I looked at insider/outsider relations in disaster risk reduction in the Iñupiat community of Utqiaġvik in Northern Alaska. Through this, I became interested in the relations between Indigenous peoples of the Arctic and settler/colonisers, and what this means for how we, as outside researchers, go about our work. I am currently a first year PhD student at the University of Leeds, and am pursuing these issues, with a focus on anti-colonial research in Utqiaġvik, and how this fits with current global priorities for tackling climate change and related conservation issues. Alongside my PhD, I continue to assist with various community-based, participatory and citizen science projects in Utqiaġvik.
